Robert T. Kenney Scholarship Reception 2017

$780,000 awarded to 386 area students by the

Robert T. Kenney Scholarship Program at the American Savings Foundation

On Tuesday, August 8, 2017 the Foundation announced and celebrated the 386 recipients of the Robert T. Kenney Scholarship for the 2017-2018 academic year.  This included both first time recipients and those receiving renewals of the scholarship.

“We see this as a long-term investment in our scholars, who are future leaders in the community,” said Maria Falvo, President and CEO of the American Savings Foundation.  “Over the years, we have kept in touch with many of our past recipients after they graduated.  It’s great when successful alumni come back to speak to our next generation of scholars.”

The reception featured three past American Savings Foundation scholarship recipients who shared stories about their own leadership journeys, and lessons they have learned along the way. Samantha Morales, who received the scholarship in 2008, spoke about her experiences embracing new leadership opportunities when asked to take on new challenges.  Caitlyn Prescott, who received the scholarship in 2002, talked about lessons she learned though both formal leadership development programs, and work experience as she’s taken on roles of increasing responsibility at her company. Jeremy Race, who received the scholarship in 1997, talked about some of the lessons he has learned during his first year as President and CEO of Junior Achievement of Southwest New England.

In addition to Robert T. Kenney Scholars and family members in the audience, the audience included younger students from several local youth groups, including the Boys and Girls Club of New Britain, the Boys and Girls Club of Greater Waterbury, Connecticut Junior Republic,  HRA of New Britain, the Waterbury Police Activity League, Pathways/Senderos, OIC of New Britain, Waterbury Youth Services, and the YMCA of Greater Waterbury.
